Rediscovering Creative Voice

I know I have written about this before, but as an artist we walk a fine line, between giving people what they want and need, and being true to our own voice. It’s a tightrope walk at times for me because I want to give people want they want and are happy with. While at the same time, I need to paint what works best for me. Sometimes I end up giving away a part of my voice without even realizing it.

(Indian Americans would call this a version of soul retrieval - which can happen in three ways - a) soul theft: someone taking something from us; b) soul gift: us giving a piece of our soul away; or c) soul loss: occurring during times of trauma or death, when parts of us are tied up with other. Me, I tend to give away and not even realize it.)

A few years ago I was dating someone, and while he was very supportive of my art, he had this idea that my color palette was not right.  That it needed to more match his own aesthetic tastes.

I tried to see this as an opportunity to expand my color palette repertoire. And came up with a few additional color palettes with which to paint from that would more suit his tastes, and those of similar background. So I painted a new series in his colors and continued to do so, not because I loved those colors the most, but because I forgot I had ever painted differently.

Recently I dated a guy who has a very similar color tastes as myself. As a gift I went through my paint sketches and gave him one I knew he would love. The thing is, pulling it out, I realized I missed that color palette.  I missed not painting in ways most important to me.

So today, I opened a few new canvases and painted in my colors - not someone else’s - my own. And it feels really good.

Has anyone re-discovered a part of themselves, they had accidentally put aside?

This post completely resonates with me!

I actually put my entire creative side on hold for far too long - society tells us that part of being an adult is putting aside frivolous things and focusing on getting a real job - and guess which category art is supposed to belong in? :P

So, I stopped drawing and painting, got married, got an office job, and tried to masquerade as a normal person. But none of those things ended up working out. My real personality eventually burst out. :D

Nowadays, I'm doing art full-time (at least until my savings run out) and I feel like I've truly found myself. But since my ultimate goal is to make money off my paintings, I find myself veering away from my true voice again, sometimes. I keep second-guessing myself, thinking "Yeah, I WANT to paint ___, but will that be salable? Maybe I should paint ___ instead."

Then I remind myself that the art people love best is the REAL stuff - the stuff that comes from my heart. People can tell when you're faking. They know when they're being pandered to. And so I force myself to focus on what *I* want.

Good for you!!! I think that life at times is a balance. And sometimes we do need to take that day job - but still find time for our art.

I too struggle with painting what I love vs painting what sells. But I have found ironically that the truer I stay to myself, the more I sell. Because people love to see paintings painted with passion. That doesn't mean I don't also paint a few things I know will sell and are popular. But I do so with my own take on them.

Amen - to not faking it! People aren't stupid - most know what dead art is and don't want it on their walls.

My personal opinion is that bedrooms, bathrooms, office, dens basements can all be painted different colors since they usually all have different themes anyways. But if rooms dont have defined separate spaces (my kitchen, eat in area, family room and foyer has an open floor plan), then paint it all the same color. But it doesnt have to be neutral. For example in my house:Office: Greyish purple1/2 bath: YellowMaster bedroom: Sage greenMaster bathroom: Sage green brown2nd bedroom: Purple (daughter)3rd bedroom: Pink (daughter)4th bedroom: Blue (son)Kids bathroom: YellowKitchen/family room/foyer: Chocolate brown TaupeLiving room/Dining room: Taupe

The more I learn about shapes, by means of critical observation, the more enjoyable painting becomes. I wonder why, through 7 years of art education at the university, no one ever pushed me to see shapes. Yet the key to painting is an intense scrutiny of shapes-the configuration, the values and the color variations and especially the edges between adjacent shapes. Closely observing these characteristics of shape has taught me more about painting than any class I ever took.

If you know how to paint and have the time I dont think that you are Crazy about the colours it is best to wait until you have chosen bedding , drapes and sofa then you can pick colours that you can carry all trough the house , I find neutral to be safe colours to me they are just like a blank canvas waiting to be painted and come to life, I love colours , they make our live brighter monotony is rather boring in my opinion.

Your friends are silly, it would take no less time to paint everything the same color than to paint it different colors if you are gong room by room (unless your doing stripes or something), Plus, that is all wasted time if you then go back and paint it later. Paint it how you like now, you can always go back and paint it neutral when you are looking to sell the house.
